Stainless Steel Crowns
Children’s teeth are small, so it can often be quite substantial when decay affects the tooth. In some cases, a simple filling is all that is necessary. But occasionally teeth require a bit more work to reliably save the tooth until its adult successor is able to erupt.
Stainless steel crowns can be a great way of saving your child’s tooth. Like regular dental crowns, they not only replace damaged tooth structure but also strengthen the existing tooth. They are resistant to decay and chipping, usually lasting the child until he or she wobbles the tooth out.
What can I expect?
Our dentists will advise you as to whether a stainless steel crown would be a good treatment option for your child. Once agreed upon, the tooth is prepared for the crown: this usually involves removal of any decay under local anaesthesia, and sometimes can involve a children’s root canal as well. The correct size crown is then found, tried on for fit, and then inserted into place. This is painless for the child.
Stainless steel crowns are just one option in treating children’s teeth. At Dr Virginia Williams’s Dental Practice, we can further advise you on what the best options may be. Feel free to ring us for any enquiries, or to make an appointment, on (03) 5331 9285.
